From Trio AAB and Julian Argüelles through to the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, Kevin Mackenzie has played a significant role in many key ensembles north of the border over the last couple of decades. His regular trio features other leading stalwarts of the scene: Brazilian-born bassist Mario Caribé and drumming compatriot Alyn Cosker. Mackenzie heads up a lyrical, understated set of originals that are injected with the spirit of folk music coming from both his bassist's latin roots and his Scottish origins. Mackenzie's buttery tone combined with the ambience of Cosker's cymbals is like an aural massage, but its slightly darker folk-song leanings eschews wine-bar jazz schmaltz. Among some seductively tuneful originals is a cover of Django Reinhardt's ‘Nuages’ and this CD indeed captures something of the guitar legend's music and its warmly soulful, generous nature.
