This is the second quartet album from Garrett and crew. It sounds like a band that has honed its craft on the circuit and has developed a unity of purpose. Garrett leans towards song structures in his compositions, keeping them melodically fairly straightforward and then adding subtle time-signature variety here and there.

The general mood is of easy-going funk-infused fusion, the electric piano and synth decoration, the mainly four-on-the-floor grooves and soulful saxophone all fulfilling their accustomed roles. The opening brace, ‘Señor Beaver’ and ‘80s Cop Show’ set the scene, the latter suggesting the quartet's natural leanings. The atmospheric ‘Burkina Faso’ and the slow grind of ‘Sexual Chocolate’ add changes of mood and pace. ‘Ponds’ give bass and drums a little more to work with, while ‘Slash 'n Grab’ finds the band properly on the boil. I understand ‘Burkina Faso’ works very well live, but on record it outstays its welcome, lacking the compositional interest to sustain it. That's a criticism that holds for ‘Sexual Chocolate’ too – it risks becoming claggy and cloying, if that's not too distasteful an image.

This is an album which is all very well conceived and expertly played – how could it not be with players of O’Higgins’ calibre? – but it still feels a little insubstantial. In its defence, though, it doesn't make great claims to profundity. These are musicians happy in their own skins, I guess.
