This is a celebratory third collection of tracks from saxophonist, singer, composer, bandleader and broadcaster (she hosts The Big Jazz Hullabaloo on Jazz Bites Radio) Kim Cypher. The songs are played with bright precision and joyful gusto and bring together a fine cast of guest performers: Liane Carroll on ‘Tomorrow’s Song’, Ray Gelato on ‘Together’ and ‘I’m in the Mood to Wish Upon a Star’, as well as Ashley Slater and Antonio Forcione on other cuts.

This collaborative aspect is a continuation of Cypher’s ‘Brighter Tomorrow’ project, started during the Covid lockdowns. The assembled crew make a life-affirming sound, not least on the Latin-flavoured original ‘Birdie in the Grass’, which Cypher was inspired to write watching ‘a tiny baby bird playing in the grass, learning to fly, flapping its wings and just loving life’. The vocal duets are fun – opener ‘Uniquely the Same’ gets the set off to a flying start – but the ballad ‘Where Time Goes’, featuring a thoughtful contribution from Forcione, shows off a different and equally impressive skill set.
