The joy of excess comes in this muvva of a box set: no less than 27 CDs, various replica memorabilia and a handsome 40-page booklet. But of course it's as a testimony to the music that this set matters: Fripp reckons Larks' Tongues In Aspic from 1973 marked a tectonic shift in his playing and it's all to the fore here as all his previous technical wizardry morphs into a power and passion that is quite unique. All traces of the blues expunged, rock grandeur meets an experimental jazz attitude; this is music of surprise, created in the moment. Even by his exacting standards, a piece like ‘Fracture’ still astonishes. And it's all counterpointed by the monster Bruford/Wetton rhythm section, without whose challenge Fripp wouldn't have had to wrench himself into his new sonic universe. Of course, you don't need 27 discs to tell you that, but Crimson relished improvs (largely down to Bruford's sergeant major stance), and their sets varied hugely. So there are fresh delights to be discovered across the material that focuses on their short 1973/74 European tour (including the iconic Concertgebouw gig). Of course you don't need this box set, any more than the world needed the gargantuan Road To Red. But, ooh, they sure feel good in your hands.
