Whoever's buying these Crimson box sets must have shelves like the Firth of Forth Bridge because they are truly humungous. As with previous releases there are various formats but essentially you're getting THRAK, ATTAKcATHRAK and Kcensington THRAK in various mixes, live concert footage (some previously unreleased) and fulsome literature. Further goodies include Tony Levin's ‘home movies’ from the band's 1994 rehearsals. A total of 12 CDs, but I may have lost count. But the heart of this audio-visual jamboree remains the extraordinary music. The double trio format remains, at the risk of offending Lark's Tongues In Aspic, Red or even the eponymous first album fans, the most satisfying, varied and loudest of the Crims' alliances. The industrial scale, the ability to double up or split into subsets, the Anglo-American tensions, the presence of Belew's voice and song craft, and, crucially, Fripp at the top of his game, as heavy as you want, as gossamer light as you desire, all contribute to an epic set of musics of heady proportions. Looks like you'll need them new shelves after all.
