Not too much more to add to my King Curtis review that appeared in Jazzwise (issue 170) except that if those albums veered comfortably on the borders of hard bop, then take a look at the titles here as an indication of what to expect from this stout-hearted Texas tenor sax icon. This is prime-cut rhythm 'n' blues with a nod in the direction of those early sides Ray Charles cut for Atlantic, here made all the more enjoyable by the contribution by a squad of twanging guitarists that include Al Casey, Mac Pierce, Billy Butler, Mickey Baker and Everett Barksdale, plus some nontoo-shabby vocals from KC himself. A word to the wise: should you invite friends back to your place to party, then tracks like ‘(Let’s Do) The Hully Gully Twist', ‘Jay Walk’, ‘The Fly’ or ‘The Peppermint Twist’ will help rock the house as opposed to those CDs by Peter Brötzmann and Sonny Sharrock prompting sudden outbursts of uninhibited dancing.
