It wouldn't necessarily be doing them a disservice to suggest that on this, their third album proper, Kodian Trio deliver a garrulous blast that rarely strays from its prevailing mood. In fact, this tightly-wound trio from the new European free-jazz underground – Brits Lisle and Webster and Belgian Serries – revel in brewing a dense, turbulent tumble that prioritises sustained energy with little room for niceties. Lisle cranks out a furiously fast, pulse-time drum clatter; Webster spits out spurts and gobbets of alto-sax, constantly straining at the very edge of physical exertion; and Serries chops up rough, serrated chords and razorwire scrabblings. That said, there are a few relatively quiet moments, which largely signal a shift in energy or a marshalling of resources: On ‘I’, Lisle's snare taps out a brief, fractured tattoo before diving headlong back into the fray; on ‘III’, sax and drums drop away allowing Serries to billow up drifting clouds of ambient sound. But, for the most part, it's as subtle as a sharp clout to the side of the head. And very good too.
