Super ensembles rarely gel, but there's no doubting the exultant chemistry of this quartet. With a chart-topping eponymous album in the can, this exuberant live recording captures a band at the end of a tour which found them celebrating the bravado of their individual contributions, while fully committed to the deep grooves that unite the quartet on their fiery journey. Wollny is the obvious propellant, but it's such a pleasure hearing Landgren so liberated, singing and never far from the blues. Each cut is a standout, with the opening, almost Nirvana-chorded ‘4WD’ setting the tone with its rapscallion verve from Wollny, a rich-toned break from Landgren and, as you'd expect from a four-wheel drive, a powerhouse engine room from Haffner, clattersome but in control and Danielson laying down a killing riff. There are echoes of EST, and 4WD have a similar rock-inflected urgency, not least on the centre-piece ‘Polygon’, which opens with Danielson's classically edged and gorgeous intro, but builds to a rocket-fuelled frenzy from Wollny, counterpointed by Haffner's epic drumming. Not always the subtlest of outings, but heh, this is a four-wheel drive in fifth gear, able to surmount anything in its path. Make way…
