Drummer Paal Nilssen-Love has always happily teetered between freedom and form. With The Thing, he’s as likely to be diving into fierce firestorms of free percussion as he is providing savage backbeats for a raw garage-punk cover version. So it’s unsurprising to find similar juxtapositions in the output of Large Unit, the high-energy, 11-plus ensemble he leads from the rear. Following up 2014’s crunching debut, Erta Ale, this latest veers from huge, multi-horned swells of free-jazz, powered by Nilssen-Love’s muscular churn, to rambunctious grooves and heavy doses of swing – all strung together by fleeting episodes of raw electronics, snuffling tuba and bleeding electric guitar. An extra rhythmic imperative is thrown into the mix by the presence of two Brazilian guest percussionists, Paulinho Bicolor and Celio de Carvalho, adding shades of Bahia with traditional instruments such as berimbau, caxixi and cuica. Apparently, this studio session was recorded just hours after the whole shebang had brought down the house at Oslo Jazzfestival last summer and the steaming energy of a live performance sizzles throughout.
