You know you're dealing with a huge sound when Paal Nilssen-Love isn't even the loudest thing in the room. This 11-piece ensemble, led by the blitzkrieg Norwegian drummer, sits halfway between the no-holds-barred free improvisation of Peter Brötzmann's Chicago Tentet, and the more structured compositions of Ken Vandermark's equally weighty Territory Band – both of which Nilssen-Love has played with. The band's signature tune ‘Cuilus’ (Finnish for “slab of meat”) is a fine example: tight horn stabs subside into flickering electronic noise, out of which arises a monstrous, driving Dragnet-style riff, while Nilssen-Love's churning polyrhythms give the brass permission to hop on and off the chart at will, with ad hoc splinter groups of two or three horns coming together for brief moments to duel for supremacy. Nilssen-Love has surrounded himself with younger Norwegian talent for this project – and some brash voices emerge, such Mats Äleklint's gale-force trombone and Børre Mølstad's blustering tuba, both of which provide a consistently hefty bottom end. With three discs capturing towering studio performances and blazing live sets, this box set is a mammoth release in everyway.
