The Indian composer-violinist Kala Ramnath’s forays into East-West collaborations have taken many forms and paths. Down the years she and they have grown increasingly more sure-footed. Fusion (2002) was at best an apprentice piece. She progressed exponentially. A composition of hers appeared on Hilary Hahn’s Grammy-winning In 27 Pieces: the Hilary Hahn Encores (2013) and her work figures in the Kronos Quartet’s Fifty for the Future: The Kronos Learning Repertoire. Closer to jazz, there are her trio collaborations with saxophonist George Brooks and harpist Gwyneth Wentink. Glow of Benares is between that and London Symphony Orchestra-curated UBS Soundscapes: Eclectica live work in 2011. In confidence, vision and delivery it utterly outshines the latter. Once again, the compositions are raga-rooted. The opening title-track is situated in the dusk raga, Shri. It also introduces the loose principle of each of the five compositions having a featured soloist, in this case Jonas Johansen on kit drums. ‘Funky Jog’ (Jog is a yearning evening raga), on which the Pandit Jasraj-taught Kala Ramnath sings, has Jacob Buchanan’s flugelhorn in the hot chair. Not to be outshone, Abhijit Banerjee figures strongly in the fifth performance, ‘Epilogue: Mumbai Footprints’. Essentially, this is Lars Møller taking – as they say in the classics – Wayne Shorter’s ‘Footprints’ from Adam’s Apple for a walk. The combination of tabla and Jonas Johansen’s kit drums and Thor Madsen’s electric guitar filigrees is what it’s all about. A work of great maturity.
