On this fifth album from LA-based vocalist White, all of the admirable qualities she possesses seem to be perfectly encapsulated on opener ‘If You Never Fall In Love With Me’ impeccable timing, a beautiful timbre, an impressive range and the ability to put across a story.
White also surrounds herself with musicians who understand how to accompany a vocalist, and the relationship she has forged with pianist, arranger and producer Quinn J ohnson over four recordings is central to the album's success. It's always a delight to hear a Mose Allison song, and the gallows humour of the title track seems entirely apposite for these times (‘Ever since the world ended, I don't go out as much’). It's also a pleasure to hear White in duet here with close friend, Dolores Scozzesi. Originally recorded for, but not included on, her 2019 album Life in the Modern World, it's good to see White's gorgeous take on the Bill Evans tune, ‘Remembering The Rain, getting an airing. Her ability to channel the communicative power of a song is perhaps best illustrated by the elegiac insight she brings to the Jimmy Webb-penned ‘Shattered’.
