It's tempting to compare Konitz's newest release Frescalalto (Jazzwise 217) and, since the above was recorded in Paris, to conclude that “Plus ça change…” Not exactly true because, though he uses one of the same chord sequences (‘All The Things You Are’), here he's more energetic and if anything freer than in 2015. He'd recently taken the Kenton shilling, rather than starving with Tristano, and used his bandleader's European tour rhythm-section, alongside Paris residents Renaud and Gourley. The initial 10-inch LP apparently consisted of seven tracks, three of which were alternate takes, but with so little direct reference to the standard melodies that they were given separate titles; then a 1970s reissue added seven more alternate takes, three of these being incomplete and therefore omitted from the 1990s CD issue recycled here. Konitz takes the lion's share of the solo space and, on different versions of the four songs he was working on, it's fascinating to hear how some ideas do get recycled despite the approach being very loose and unprogrammed. Good for study as well as enjoyment.
