Lee Konitz presents a well-scrubbed image on the cover picture here, so clean-shaven and tidy that it's hard to imagine why he was turned back to Germany as a terrorist suspect when attempting to fulfil a gig at the 606 Club a couple of years back. Maybe the night shift at Stansted had never seen a Selmer Mark VI alto before. He also sounds neater and tidier than usual with a young rhythm section, although on ‘The Song Is You’ he does seem to be playing at a different tempo than the band. He was already 82 at the time of this 2009 recording, a live session inexplicably suppressed for five years, so maybe the dead-slow tempos were only to be expected. Most of the best moments do come this way, with Lee dreamwalking through ‘Skylark’, ‘In Your Own Sweet Way’ and other goodies with nothing but a few cushioning chords behind him. They say the last thing a star loses is his sound, and Konitz's remains engagingly emotive and true here.
