Four albums over three different labels by one of hard bop's original enfant terribles. Dizzy Atmosphere is performed by a spirited septet drawn from the ranks of Dizzy Gillespie's 1957 Big Band. During the 1960 period that covered the other three albums, Morgan was a member of The Jazz Messengers (Art Blakey drums on all three) and while he was often seen as a firebrand, his approach to ballads, such as ‘I'm A Fool To Want You’ and ‘Easy Livin’’, reveals a maturity far beyond that of someone who had recently vacated his teens. Not only was Morgan's tone of the purest to be heard but his sheer technique was truly astounding and an ever-improving force to be reckoned with. Soon, along with Freddie Hubbard and Thad Jones, he would prove himself a top gun. And yet, the (very) best was still to come.
