Fifty years or so after they started recording together, including plenty of Brazilian-influenced music, Ritenour and Grusin set off last year for São Paulo to record with a cross section of players and singers who are making the running there today, along with Swiss-born harmonica player Grégroire Maret.
Some of the music is a bit too ‘smooth jazz-ish’ for its own good, including a slushy version of Ivan Lins’ song ‘Vitorioso’. But when it really clicks, the ensemble is exciting and vigorous, and the guests add a sprinkle of stardust.
This applies to the opening ‘Carvo e Caela’ (by Milton Nascimento), with a charismatic vocal from Tatiana Parra, and to Celso Fonseca’s ‘My Crooked Samba’. Pick of the bunch are Jobim’s composition ‘Stone Flower’ (with Chico Pinheiro guesting, and some fine drumming from Ribiero), and Ritenour’s ‘Lil’ Rock Way’, which brings a touch of funky blues feeling into the Brazilian mix, and gives Maret a chance to shine.
