New York–based, Argentinian-born pianist and keyboardist Leo Genovese has produced consistently fascinating work as leader and sideman for over two decades, and this solo recording is a notable entry in his discography. It is short and long form. Three pieces of varying length, ‘Part 3’ being the snip at two minutes, ‘Part 2’ the epic at 35, reflect a wide range of impulses.

The main thread running through the album is the kind of rhythmic dynamism or near constant flow of percussive phrases that acknowledges the foundational vocabulary of Cecil Taylor, Don Pullen and Matthew Shipp.

Like his forebears, Genovese has a lightning quick right hand that unleashes an abundance of ‘scramble lines’, ‘namely quicksilver ascents-descents on a fluid meter that are stimulating, but he also catches the ear with still water laments that make the music a curious, whimsical kaleidoscope of ideas. Challenging and invigorating work.
