Bassist Leon Lee Dorsey has a lustrous reputation having played alongside the likes of Wynton Marsalis and Cassandra Wilson, and drummer Mike Clark embodies even more jazz history, having performed with Gil Evans, Chet Baker – you name it.
And now, since 2019, the pair have forged a fruitful collaboration as one of the finest rhythm units in jazz. This is their sixth release together in the past four years. Following on from projects such as Wolff Clark Dorsey Play Sgt. Pepper, made with pianist Michael Wolff, this trio recording has a great open feel: Clark's cymbals are foregrounded alongside Russell Malone's guitar.
The nine-track set runs the gamut from funky opener ‘Cantaloupe Island’ (Clark was an outstanding member of Herbie Hancock's Headhunters in the 1970s, of course) through to a supremely breezy and quietly virtuosic take on Wes Montgomery's ‘The Thumb’, via a lovely version of Ray Noble's ballad ‘The Very Thought of You’ and an inventive, mid-paced instrumental reimagining of Prince's ‘Thieves in the Temple’ – Malone's six-string work is a joy. Overall, it sounds like the work of three extremely talented musicians having fun, and is likely to carry you to a happy place.
