At least the public-domain material on Fresh Sound is intelligently organised, as in the present instance of an original LP being reunited with half as much again of material that was recorded on the same gig at San Francisco's Jazz Workshop. This was only shortly after McCann emerged in the jazz world, and the all-instrumental programme is great fun if you accept the self-imposed limitations of simplistic blues and almost corny standards. Some of the limitations actually come from McCann's piano technique, which is, to be honest, single-mindedly funky but in a fundamentally populist way. Whereas Junior Mance sounds academically correct and jazzily inventive, McCann is merely about having a good time. If you're similarly inclined, then titles like ‘Oh Them Golden Gates’ (a 12-bar honoring San Fran, of course) or ‘We'll See Y'awll After While, Ya Heah' will be right up your street.
