As Lester Young entered the last decade of his often turbulent life, it became obvious that he was in decline both physically and mentally as he continued to retreat into a shell. Nevertheless, such was his standing that he was still able to command in the region of $50,000 annually. Often appearing solo (JATP) or with a small pick-up group, there were occasions when he sounded close to his old self, but more often than not he proved erratic and listless. On this bootleg quality release, the only person to add drive to the noisy event is his former Basie sidekick Jo Jones. As for pianist Kenny Drew, he is saddled with a truly terrible instrument which should have been reduced to firewood years earlier. And that about says it all.
