Let Spin, a new prog-jazz supergroup, has a foot in both the London and Manchester camps of the UK's alt. jazz scene. It's made up of the guitarist from the Babel label's recent Lit-jazz ensemble Moss Project (Moss Freed), the former Acoustic Ladyland and Melt Yourself Down electric bassist (Ruth Goller), one half of Led Bib's horn frontline (Chris Williams) and the Mancunian Beats & Pieces big band drummer Finlay Panter. The inspirations range from Soft Machine-like prog, eastern European folk song through to more Led Zep-influenced avantrock and post-punk jazz. But there is also a love of the melodic hook here in addition to the kind of angular zigzagging themes usually heard from musicians with similar interests. Originals with monster surging riffs in which guitarist Freed is equal parts Mick Ronson, Queens of the Stone Age and John McLaughlin, coincides with a more gently enigmatic approach, if you can imagine the Motian-Frisell-Lovano trio working the 1970s Canterbury scene. The sturdily inventive specialist electric bassist Ruth Goller makes a notable contribution too. It's good to see a young collective doing an impressive job at communicating the unpredictable.
