The title riffs on an essay by Renaissance scholar Erasmus, which posits that only folly can bring us close to God and, certainly, as we've come to expect from the febrile 21st century Portuguese free music scene, the emphasis here is on the kind of furrow-browed, open-hearted heaviosity which some might identify as the healing force of the universe. Though nominally led by guitarist Luís Lopes, it's pianist Rodrigo Pinheiro (best known as part of RED Trio) who has the most to say, offering an almost ceaseless commentary of fleet-fingered, loquacious activity. At times, it feels a little as if the ensemble are working their way through some of John Stevens’ improv workshopping ideas, such as the long, slow, protracted group sigh at the beginning or the interlude of furtive, pointillist plinks and spurts. But when the energy crests – as it frequently does – Lisbon Freedom Unit quite firmly and effectively position themselves in the tough-guy corner of the yard first staked out by Brötzmann's Machine Gun half a century ago.
