This encounter between pianist Liam Noble and alto saxophonist Geoff Simkins positively pings with intelligence and enthusiasm as the duo navigate their way through a selection of songs, standards and surprises. Think of it as an antidote to formless free-improv. Here, the structure of each composition provides a springboard to improvisation that’s adventurous, keen to take risks but always in service of the tune.
It’s beautifully done. The evergreen 'Stella By Starlight' provides an opportunity to mischievously skirt the familiar melody, with both players revelling in subtle rhythmic and harmonic deconstructions and challenges. Duke Ellington’s 'Warm Valley' is a languid tale full of relaxed digressions and gentle interrogations. And, on 'Save A Prayer', the two luxuriate in the undeniably piquant chord sequence underpinning Duran Duran’s 1982 pop hit.
The sense of fun is palpable. On the high-spirited finale, 'When You’re Smiling', Noble and Simkins engage in a cryptic game of cat-and-mouse, shadowing and pre-empting each other’s moves with gleeful wit and skill, and building a dense, multi-layered fugue in the process. If you need a reminder of the transporting power of music made in the moment for the sheer joy of it, look no further.
