Apparently Australian bassist/composer Linda Oh spent her youth playing in Red Hot Chili Peppers cover bands. You'd never guess she had any allegiance to the loud ’n’ proud US rap-rockers from this intriguingly recessed, subtly propulsive collection of originals, billed as a ‘set of musical postcards from her travels’. Oh is well established as the bass player in Dave Douglas' current quintet and in the group that Douglas co-leads with Joe Lovano, Sound Prints. Sun Pictures (named for the oldest still-operational outdoor movie theatre, in Perth, Australia) is her third outing as leader in her own right, and it's a smart exercise in controlled elaborations of texture and tension – the sudden, sunny resolutions in ‘Blue over Gold’, a meditation on a Mark Rothko canvas, are very welcome after all the nagging, coiled approach work. The looping, minimalism-tinged opener ‘Shutterspeed Dreams’, meanwhile, is assembled from scraps and fragments from the session – judging by the results here, more music should be made in this way.
