As Miles shaped Herbie so Herbie has shaped many others. Lionel Loueke is one of the pianist's most significant bandmembers of recent years, and it feels right and proper that the guitarist has chosen to recognise that with this fine take on the embarrassment of riches that is the HH songbook. Perhaps more importantly, Loueke reflects the vast timespan of the icon's career, reaching right back to 1960s soul jazz gems such as ‘Watermelon Man’, moving on to 70s fusion anthem ‘Actual Proof’ and the 80s hip-hop of ‘Rockit’
Playing this superlative music is a double-edged sword as it requires both imagination and skill to bring new threads to such well-woven tapestries. Ever an adventurer, Loueke raises the stakes and opts for solo guitar, which is a format he is more than comfortable in, but it means he has to balance chords and single note lines to serve the richness of the songs. At times he unleashes combustible rhythmic energy by way of a crisp percussive attack that has a pleasing country funk resonance, as in a fizzing ‘Hang Up Your Hang Ups’, but elsewhere he really underlines Hancock's lavish melodic gifts by way of suitably ethereal versions of ‘Butterfly’, ‘Dolphin Dance’ and ‘Maiden Voyage’. Loueke, with his subtlety and strength, loosely invokes Stanley Jordan, who finger-tapped his way to acclaim many moons ago, but this is very much HH remade à la LL.
