Ball already has an impressive classical career, leading Nigel Kennedy's Orchestra of Life.
She also contributed to the Steve Reich celebration, Desert Music, at this year's Proms. And like Kennedy she's passionate about all kinds of music, which led her to create Classical Kicks, a regular ‘classical’ gig upstairs at Ronnie's. Both EPs have a latin core, but Hasta Siempre focuses on Ball's vocals and own writing, featuring three songs written with the ever-reliable James Pearson. But it's Ball's violin we want to hear and it's on Otra Vez that the fun begins. Armed with an added string quartet, more latin percussion and with a couple of Piazzolla tunes to mine, Ball has, um, a ball, if in an awfully well trained kind of way (Stuff Smith she ain't, but, hey, who is?). ‘Libertango’ moves through a baroque opening into showboating of a kind that Nige would appreciate, while ‘Escualo’ has darker tonings. Ball's solid sidemen lend their jazz credibility and, if nothing else, these EPs are a fine calling card for Ball's class, classical acts.
