The logical bridge between Bird and Cannonball, Lou Donaldson proved just as enticing to a large appreciative audience. In fact, Donaldson often included a Bird original (or a composition associated with him) in an album's playlist. Here he does justice to ‘Dewey Square’ and ‘Cool Blues’. A most prolific recording artist, it was Donaldson's ability to play long and clean uncluttered lines that was an integral part of his appeal and though he owed an obvious allegiance to Bird he was nevertheless able to fashion his own identifiable sound, which was faithfully captured by Rudy Van Gelder. For much of his early career the much underrated Herman Foster sat at the piano and contributed to the overall success of a session. Donaldson later upped his already proven natural funkability on Here ’Tis, when he called upon the support of organist Baby Face Willette and guitarist Grant Green. At the time of writing Lou Donaldson is in his 90th year and still spreading the boogaloo gospel.
