While rightly regarded as one of the most fiery and energetic of players imaginable, Moholo-Moholo also makes music that has a great quality of lament. Many of the sensual songs on this enjoyable concert recording are steeped in the kind of pathos that would melt the hardest of hearts yet crucially they steer clear of any facile sentimentality. This is due to the tough, full-on charge of the rhythm and horn sections, even when in ballad mode, and, in no small measure, to the singular vocal style of the great Francine Luce. Although tonally dissimilar to Abbey Lincoln she projects a comparable sense of authority and conviction, and regardless of whether she is singing melodies or creating textures she is a key member of the ensemble. Then again the name Unit is not for nothing, as this is very much a unified, cohesive group, that, much like a Mingus band or a version of the Messengers, creates a very sophisticated orchestral groove.
