This group is a vital preservation and extension of the all-important legacy of South African jazz in Britain. Moholo-Moholo's grandee status as the sole survivor of The Blue Notes makes him living history, and he sounds more revitalied than ever, leading this group of various generations whose cohesion is notable from the outset. While their ability to negotiate rousing themes, stomping grooves and soaring passages of rubato, all held together by the ferocity and elasticity of Moholo-Moholo's work on the kit, is winningly appealing, what is even more important is the great richness of the repertoire. This performance from Cafe OTO in east London sees the band run through a set list of bona fide anthems that move from joy to sorrow with much grace, penned by such as Dudu Pukwana, Pule Pheto, Chris McGregor and Mackay Davashe, among others. It is everything that is needed to uplift the people, especially those who still mourn the loss of John Jack, the truly inspiring and indefatigable beloved champion of British jazz, to whom the music is dedicated.
