Following his brilliant trio set for Sunnyside with Drew Gress and Jack DeJohnette, Venezuelan pianist Perdomo (also featured on Ravi Coltrane's Blue Note debut) returns to his native roots with this exhilarating, sunshine-laden, generation-mixing album with a personnel that had never before played together, but which exudes a remarkably joyous spirit that has captured some of the sounds Luis heard in his youth, plus four originals that personify the confidence he now has in his compositional ability. From the radiant repeated rocking riff that opens his oddly named first track (‘The Other Left’) and which continues under the jagged melodic line, right through to the roaring fade on the DeJohnette tune ‘Major General’, this entire set is a credit to all concerned. Mark Shim's appearances on record are far too few these days. Here he's in his best ‘dog-harrowing-a-bone’ mode, sounding a little like Gary Thomas. He and Perdomo did two club dates together last autumn and discovered a real chemistry. Gonzales is still the doyen of latin bassists, while Berroa, that other stalwart, brings back memories of an exciting one-nighter at Scott's with a group that included David Sánchez. Herrera, a stimulating percussionist, is currently with Manuel Valera's New Cuban Express. There are also new perspectives on the jazz standards ‘Solar’ and ‘Un Poco Loco’ (Bud Powell was an early influence on Perdomo) plus a couple of ballads and some tasteful Rhodes work on two tracks.
