Recorded after a period on the road in 2022-3, this international quintet is a tightly-integrated band, its melodic lines shared between Churchill’s voice, Saber’s guitar and a range of effects from DeRungs, with complex yet accessible accompaniment from Dittman and Esser. Immy Churchill’s impressive vocal contribution includes wordless unison or close harmony with guitar and keyboard, or as on ‘Colours’ delivering lyrics with intensity and feeling, describing lost love, before developing into more wordless improvisation, some of the phrases then picked up and further worked on by DeRungs’ piano.
It’s this aspect of the band, where powerful lyrics mingle seamlessly with instrumental settings, that leaves us with the most memorable moments on the album, ‘Colours’ followed by the atmospheric ‘In the Dark’, or the wistful, melancholic ‘Goodbye Younger Self’. And for joyous collective improvisation, then ‘16 Degrees’ offers a bright contrast. All in all, a fascinating collection that repays repeated listening.
