Originally self-released in Poland two years ago, Long-Distance Connections now gets an international release. Recorded across three continents - Pawlik’s core band is Polish, with a raft of American fusion stars flexed in plus Aussie percussionist South - it is perhaps too easy to file the release under ‘fusion by committee’ with various files stitched together to produce a shiny but hardly original product.
But Pawlik has jazz in his genes, his dad Wlodek is respected in his homeland and was the first Polish jazzer to win a Grammy. Weave into this the classical background of his concert pianist mother and Pawlik has solid influences to draw upon. Although none of that preps you for the surprise of the sub-continental vibe of the opening ‘Indian Garden’, which Mike Stern has great fun with. More obviously coming out of a 1980s fusion mode is the high tempo ‘A Matter of Urgency’. The Brecker/Stern/Kennedy nexus likewise drives on ‘Greg’s Walk’. But you really want to hear more of Pawlik the keys man or his Polish compatriots. ‘Reflection’ is a meditative piano feature and finds Pawlik on cello, his first instrument. Likewise ‘Planet X’ finds Pawlik laying down intriguing synth colours under a suitably ‘spacey’ arrangement. The American names may sell the album, but it’s Pawlik and his Polish colleagues whose skills need to be heard more.
