Expect no twists on the US jazz tradition, or safe or even avant-garde takes on tunes from the Great American Songbook from this Norwegian instrumental psych-drone trio. Influences are more of the order of Sonic Youth, The Doors and The Durutti Column than Miles or Trane, and two of the members – guitarist Per Steinar Lie and drummer Ørjan Haaland – are from the post-rock band Low Frequency In Stereo. They make a noise that's by turns minimal and maximal, ranging from the quietly folksy ambient cluster of tunes of ‘Lux’, ‘Husky’ and ‘Keelwater’, all very Nordic in feel and evocative of icily calm Northern landscapes, to the alt noise rock of ‘Ira Furore’ and the tumultuous cacophony of closing epic ‘Svartaskjaer’, no less Nordic in feel but with a storm brewing in the sky and trolls gathering to perform some ancient rite of passage in the middle distance. What gives the trio's sound its distinction is the presence of fiddler Nils Økland: ‘Echo Plexus’ is pitched midway between a Waterboys outtake and an instrumental development of a strand of Kate Bush's ‘The Ninth Wave’.
