As computed in Arriale's liner-note, this must be her twelfth CD, having followed nine trio sets with two quartets, one featuring Randy Brecker and the other Bill McHenry. So the logical next step is this solo item, recorded ‘live in performance’ (in Tampa, Florida) but without any audience audible. The close-up sound on the piano reminds us of Arriale's fine command of nuance and touch, which only becomes an occasional problem when it feels a little too polite. Seven originals are a pleasing selection of almost folksy melodies with some lyrical improvisation attached, although the blues ‘Yada, Yada, Yada’ sounds restrained and even clichéd at times. While this works excellently on the closing Billy Joel ballad and even on ‘Wouldn't It Be Loverly’, the uptempo ‘What Is This Thing Called Love’ and two Monk tunes, with superficial clusters thrown in, let the rest of the programme down. A bit of the energy of Jessica Williams's solo would not go amiss.
