Delville and Biano wrote all the material here themselves but, as on their previous album, they are joined by a guest. In a sense it was a risky venture, Liebman not being known for his love of rocky, distorted guitars, but the saxophonist seems to have relished the experience; so well did it work out, in fact, that an ongoing project is expected to emerge. What is really remarkable is how much noise they make for a trio, largely thanks to the imaginative use of technology. Biano has one laptop, responsible for rhythmic loops of enormous length: apparently over 100 bars at times, thereby avoiding any noticeable repetition. As well as putting his guitar through a loop pedal, Delville operates a second computer, contributing harmonic atmospherics. On bass is Ableton software, replete with deliberately unpredictable computer inflections intended to inspire humanoid happy accidents. The result, Liebman suggests in the liner notes, is a ‘bouillabaisse’ of On The Corner, punk rock and techno.
