Melodic music played with sensitivity and conviction in a style that borrows more from folk and contemporary classical music than jazz, especially when Goloubev bows his double-bass, this album recalls recent work by Al Di Meola in his world-music bag. Like him, Polish guitarist-composer Pysz uses one of these electric guitars specifically designed to get an acoustic tone and employs what sounds like an open tuning to heighten that effect. Also like ADM, he sometimes doubles the tempos to release a flamenco-like flurry, but generally he maintains the leisurely tempos and unchanging instrumentation which give the session a samey feel. Drummer Sirkis has one solo on ‘Steps of Time’, but otherwise this must be his most restrained album yet. On most tracks he keeps time by clicking gently against one metallic part of his kit. I imagine he pounded his car dashboard all the way home. Soothing music, this, something for a quiet evening by the fireside.
