Not for nothing is Ken Vandermark known as the hardest working man in avant-jazz. Each of these three lengthy compositions – clocking in at around a quarter of an hour per track – contains enough ideas to fill a whole album in less audacious hands. As it is, he's happy for the quartet to romp through fertile episodes lasting just a few moments at a time. Skipping soul-funk drums and jagged bass riffage provide a buoyant playground for Vandermark to roll out his bag of hooks, honks and shrieks, constantly flitting around the invisible and semi-permeable ‘in’/‘out’ membrane. But it's Kurtzmann's manipulation of the endlessly versatile LLOOPP software that really pulls the rug out from under proceedings, using sudden judder-drones and sci-fi whooshes to signal abrupt changes in direction. Whether that means winding into an intricate and tightly coiled prog shape or dropping down to tense and scratching group improv is anyone's guess – but there's a sense that everyone knows exactly where they're going at every moment. Give that man a cigar. He deserves it.
