This latest release from Swedish jazz flautist Magnus Lindgren is a homage to Herbie Mann, a giant of an earlier generation of jazz flute blowers. More specifically, it's a tribute to Mann's classic 1969 album Memphis Underground, which charted in Rolling Stone's all-time ‘100 Best Jazz Albums’ list a few years ago. Not that the track-listing is the same – far from it. In fact, the only tune from Memphis Underground to resurface on Stockholm Underground is ‘Chain of Fools’, which had already been a hit for Aretha Franklin before Mann gave it his own distinctive soul-jazz treatment; Ida Sand provides the vocals here. Rather, what the discs have in common is a certain soulful, funky cool, as well as the breathy softness of Mann's and Lindgren's playing. Lindgren is at the heart of a great cast of mostly Swedish players, with ‘curator/producer’ Siggi Loch at the helm, ably assisted by co-producer Nils Landgren. It's proof that there's plenty of jazz life continually to be found in Stockholm.
