Since the tragic diving accident that claimed Esbjörn Svensson’s life on 14 June 2008, both Öström and bassist Dan Berglund, the pianist’s drummer and bassist respectively, have been recalibrating their careers in separate successful directions. Finally, we get a sense of the terrible loss they felt when, in the liner notes, Öström writes of his struggle “to find my way back to life. Sometimes life has been OK, but at other times it has been really dark”. His way back has been through music, and his previous two albums now appear as stepping stones to Parachute that speaks of optimistic, outgoing moods that suggest on the one hand an emergence from the darkness he has endured, on the other of his maturing skills as a leader and conceptualist. This is probably the most ‘jazzy’ of the three albums since Svensson’s death, with both Andreas Hourdakis on guitar and Daniel Karlsson on piano making telling contributions on this well conceived and well executed album.
