Easily the best album so far by Magnus Öström. While previous albums under his own name were perhaps guilty of overthinking, and strained somewhat for effect A Room For Travellers flows. More to the point, there is a transparency and clarity, simplicity even (the bass line in ‘Flowfly’) that engages the listener. The music is far more relaxed than his previous albums, perhaps reflective of the inner man finding himself, and maintains a mood of quiet reflection and melancholy, prompted perhaps by Öström’s frustration with mankind’s lack of respect for nature. The compositions are well crafted – ‘Oceans’ especially or ‘On the High in My Life’ – tempo and rhythm well-chosen and while harmonically they lack complexity, this is often picked-up by the rhythmic component of the composition. More to the point it’s an album you want to play again, and again, and you can’t ask much more than that.
