Dawn is a collaboration between Mexican-born, NYC-based jazz singer Magos Herrera and Madrid-born guitarist, composer and producer Javier Limón, in which quietude, the space between the notes and a less-is-more aesthetic are used to telling effect. Herrera, who has previously recorded with pianist Aaron Goldberg, guitarist Lionel Loueke and bassist John Patitucci among others, has a fascinating, burnished timbral quality. Limón, who has worked with Paco de Lucía, Avishai Cohen, Wynton Marsalis, Joe Lovano and more, demonstrates a minimalist self-restraint in his flamenco playing. Heard together, voice and guitar dovetail exquisitely. As well as a finely balanced selection of classics and lesser known gems including ‘Afro Blue’, ‘Skylark’, ‘Blue in Green’, Jobim's ‘O Que Tinha de Ser’, plus the extraordinarily beautiful Mexican folk song ‘La Llorona’, the duo supply a couple of originals. The title track, the pick of the two, is simplicity itself, consisting of a syncopated single note guitar line, which underpins Herrera's haunting, and subtly harmonised, refrain (‘No one but you, knows about me’). The song's quiet embrace is a delight.
