The first edition of the Mahavishnu Orchestra continues to inspire musicians 40 years later simply because of the density of information compressed within their genre busting recordings. Superficially, their daunting musicianship and ability to float over complex time signatures took the breath away, but beneath lay McLaughlin's fascination with Indian music, his love of Miles Davis' music, of Coltrane and Bill Evans and classical music (that would find expression in 1974's Apocalypse). Musicians now pour over these works with the kind of wonder archaeologists reserve for exploring a particularly valuable Egyptian tomb. The diverse ways this impacts on their own musical outlook can gleaned from this 2 CD set of 25 responses from a diverse selection of bands from Asaf Sirkis & Inner Noise to guitar shredder Steve Vai. This broad range of music, often from bands with delightful names such as The Trio of Stridence or Forever Sharp and Vivid makes it difficult to experience any kind of centre to this collection, so the best thing is to let the music play and whatever takes your fancy, takes your fancy.
