Originally released on Bill Laswell's Axiom label, this meeting between US saxophone legend Pharoah Sanders and North African Gnawa music maestro Maleem Mahmoud Ghania is akin to being the musical equivalent to the latest super hero movie blockbuster. Here is music that will thrill, astound and excite, coupled to rhythms that summon up states of trance as the music steadily unfurls before the listener. The traditional instrumentation played here, together with the vocal chorusing of Ghania's assembled family, conjures up the perfect atmosphere for Sanders’ meditative tenor to breathe through. As the session continues Sanders abandons whatever creative comfort zone he has been sheltering behind and blows free – letting rip with a series of passionately played solos that become absorbed within the hypnotic pulse of the Gnawa beat. At the same time the intensity of Sanders’ playing fuels the Moroccan musicians to new heights of creative ecstasy, until the session ascends towards a true sense of nirvana. Misunderstood when it was first released 25 years ago, but now hailed a masterpiece, it is impossible to walk away from this recording without feeling emotionally moved and spiritually uplifted.
