Part funded by Creative Scotland, the rhythm tracks on this were laid down by Glaswegian pianist Marco Cafolla during lockdown; sent to Orangefish Studios in Brooklyn to get “an authentic NYC vibe” courtesy of Neivergelt, Pazner and Pelt; then pinged back to Glasgow where Wisniewski, Owers, Jay, Edgar and Rachel Lightbody (his regular band) added their parts.
The results justifiy the trans-continental file sharing: well-conceived with a nice open, modal feel with Rachel Lightfoot’s wordless vocal an octave above the ensemble parts, lending a spacious, light and airy atmosphere. Both Jeremy Pelt and Cameron Jay contribute sound offerings within the context of music, but Wisniewski sometimes wanders off the reservation, following his personal muse which usually involves too many notes.
Despite the somewhat pretentious claims that this album is ‘a conceptual journey through life and the universe’, the music itself is unpretentious and accessible. This is the kind of, “If this is jazz, then I like it” music that will make a lot of friends in live performance.
