This is a follow-up to 2005's Some Love Songs by the same trio, which was welcomed by the late Keith Shadwick in Jazzwise 112. Once again leading off with a Joni Mitchell song (in this case, ‘I Don't Know Where I Stand’), the group soon revert to earlier pop material with the likes of the 1930s-originated ‘My Funny Valentine’ and the 1950s ‘When I Fall In Love’. The fact that these two are associated with Bill Evans and subsequently with Jarrett is a clue to the approach, yet the freedoms available are exploited in a pleasantly unfl amboyant way, thanks to the mainly slow tempos. Copland himself has a less direct, more glancing attack than those predecessors, allowing for occasional references to polytonality but, though less obvious, the rhythmic drive is always evident. While the leader's one original, ‘Rainbow's End’, is firmly within the overall dreamy mood, an up-tempo ‘I Remember You’ is a welcome break, as is the surprise inclusion of Ron Carter's ‘Eighty-One’.
