Even Ribot’s wide-open CV, riding shotgun with everyone from Tom Waits to Elton John, and as comfortable as leader with Albert Ayler’s music as Cuban son, doesn’t prepare you for this new fusion frontier: Gamble and Huff’s Philly soul sound meets Ornette’s guitar-heavy, harmolodic Full Force. These iconic 1970s styles aren’t exactly obvious fits, but Ribot clearly wants to harness the Philly sound’s optimistic excitement to Ornette’s wilder ambition. Covering seven of Philadelphia International’s biggest hits, his band include Philly- raised, Full Force veteran rhythm section Jamaaladeen Tacuma and G. Calvin Weston. The string trio added for this night in Tokyo meanwhile anchor the music in the lush, velvety pleasures with which Gamble and Huff smoothed the way for disco. That slick urban uplift, though never abandoned by Ribot, becomes woozier and more exploratory as his and Halvorson’s fast, squally guitar funk goes further out into effects-laden sound. The two aesthetics work in parallel and sometimes blur, as when the strings join Weston in slashing, punching punctuation. Several appropriately Asiatic-sounding, dreamily woozy intros seem to be from a yet more intriguing, offbeat project. The occasional vocals, of course, wouldn’t get past Gamble and Huff’s door.
