The Polish pianist Marcin Wasilewski trio's new album has rather fittingly arrived following the sad passing of compatriot Tomasz Stańko. The same trio here made up one of that trumpet-player's most revered associations, releasing the classic Soul of Things in 2001, followed by Suspended Night and Lontano. Known as the Simple Acoustic, Wasilewski's piano trio is one of the most stable line-ups in jazz, having been assembled all of 25 years ago. This is their fifth for ECM, but first ‘live’ album, recorded at Antwerp's excellent Jazz Middelheim festival in 2016. Throughout, the trio's bluesy, propulsive groove factor contrasts with a majestic classical music sensibility. Including a few tracks from the 2014 album release Spark of Life, featuring guest saxophonist Joakim Milder, the trio's compelling all-for-one cohesion is testament to its longevity. It's a world away too from the tranquil, pristine-sounding production values heard on their previous ECM studio recordings. Here a raw (you can feel the presence of the huge 4,000 capacity audience), yet sonically wellbalanced mix, retains the electricity of their live performances, as anyone who's seen the trio perform would recognise.
