This is the Marcin Wasilewski Trio's second outing on an ECM disc in just a matter of months, having provided back-up to Jacob Young on Forever Young earlier in the year. Spark of Life is the Polish group's fourth release under its own name on Manfred Eicher's label, and on this occasion they're joined by a guest performer, Swedish saxophonist Joakim Milder, who gives the piano trio a gently different tone and texture on tracks such as ‘Sleep Safe And Warm’, a Krzysztof Komeda composition that first appeared on the soundtrack to Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby, and ‘Still’, which was penned by Milder. But the principal dynamic here remains that between the core trio members, who, though still in their thirties, have been performing together for over two decades (formerly as the Simple Acoustic Trio). There's a wonderfully deft and muscularly understated cover of The Police's ‘Message In A Bottle’ and an acoustic take on Herbie Hancock's ‘Actual Proof’, dispatched with Bill Evans-style aplomb by the ever-inspiring Wasilewski.
