Believe it or not, this is trumpeter Marcus Printup's 14th album as leader. More often than not, he uses past or present members of various Wynton Marsalis-associated outfits and he's still a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. This time, for a complete change, he's surrounded by young musicians who have never played with Wynton. There's a promising young Trane-inspired tenor player and an excellent rhythm section featuring Ben Williams, who is definitely the best and most deservedly in-demand new bassist for years, and Helen Sung, whose piano solos and comping tend to steal the honours on a CD of Printup originals, most of which are ideal for blowing on. The record is actually dedicated to his late father, who died of Alzheimer's shortly before the sessions and for whom the poignant title track was written. In contrast, the closing ‘To The Mountain Top’ is a joyous gospel-driven 3/4 tune for his local church where his father chaired the Board of Deacons and where his mother and grandfather sang in the choir. His trumpet solos are full of emotion and the album works well. Let's hope he'll continue to use youngsters like these. They bring out the best in him.
