As a newcomer in his 20s, the Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra trumpeter was given a leg up by mature drummer Carl Allen; now Printup is doing the same, bringing Bartley (21 at the time of recording) and Hughes (just 18) alongside him in the front line for this first sextet Printup session since 2001 ’s The New Boogaloo. The rest of the band may not be as fresh-faced but they’re not veterans either.

The programme is a mixture of Printup originals and tried and trusted musical vehicles: the great American songbook choice is ‘My Foolish Heart’, which the leader offers as a ballad feature for his teenage ’bonist; the bebop tune is Parker’s ‘Au Privave’, which Printup presents to Bartley sans piano in order to provide him with more stretching room; Dave Brubeck’s ‘In Your Own Sweet Way’ is a gift to the whole band; and the trumpeter testifies himself on the traditional hymn ‘How Great Thou Art’ before handing it over to Johnson for some grand gospel decoration. Of the originals, ‘En Route’ is a jolly, rolling opener, ‘The Bishop’ a sweet pop ballad and ‘Greasy’ a Blakeyish soul-funker. It’s very much from the ‘if it ain’t broke’ end of jazz philosophy so sounds fairly ageless despite the youthful years of some of the band.
